What is a dental filling?
The purpose of a dental filling is to fill a small hole (cavity) in your teeth or repair other issues, like a chipped tooth.
It is important not to ignore a cavity, as if it can cause pain and lead to infections. Cavities get larger with time, so it is better to get them treated (filled) sooner rather than later. If cavities are ignored and not treated, it will eventually worsen and could lead to you losing a tooth.
During your appointment, the dentist will clean the affect area and then fill the hole with a certain material.
What are the different types of fillings available?
- Amalgam
- Composite
- Porcelain
Depending on your budget and the look you are hoping to achieve, our dental team will be able to recommend the best type of filling for you. During your appointment and oral examination, the dentist will take into account the position of the tooth and how damaged it is prior to providing you with the most suitable options.
Amalgam
Amalgam fillings are made from a combination of metals and are silver in colour. For this reason, it is best to avoid having these fillings towards the front of the mouth, as they will be very visible and noticeable. As these fillings are durable, they are more suitable for use for the teeth at the back of the mouth.
Composite
Composite fillings (also known as white fillings due to the colour) are a better aesthetic option than the more traditional amalgam fillings. They match the colour of your natural teeth and therefore blend in perfectly. This is the best option if you don’t want your fillings to be visible when you laugh or speak.
Porcelain
Porcelain fillings are also known as “inlays” or “overlays”. They are sent off to get created in a lab, rather than being inserted into the tooth. They are durable and are chosen to match with your natural tooth. They are a more durable option than amalgam or composite fillings, especially when they are bonded with metal.
How long does it last?
If you follow the aftercare instructions provided by your dentist, your fillings can last for a long time. The time that the filling will last depends on the type that you opt for. Amalgam lasts for approx. 20 years, composite fillings last for approx. 15 years and porcelain fillings last for approx. 20 years.
Your dentist will also recommend that you have regular check-ups and appointments with a hygienist.
Aftercare
Following your appointment, you might find that your mouth feels numb due to the effects of the anaesthetic. This will eventually wear off and you will find it easier to speak/eat. Your dentist will also recommend that you refrain from chewing using the side of your mouth the filling was inserted. You may also experience some tooth sensitivity, but this should eventually wear off.
